When presenting the Review of Working Conditions before the Higher Council for Prevention of Occupational Risks, the French Minister of Labour Xavier Bertrand presented the definitive statistics for occupational injuries in 2006 and for occupational diseases in 2005. For the first time in five years, the number of serious occupational injuries declined (down 10.3%). At the same time, fatal injuries increased sharply, by 13.3%. In 2006, 537 people died from the sequels of an occupational injury. The most dangerous sectors remain building and public works. Regarding occupational diseases, the number of cases recognised rose to 52,979 in 2005, which represents an increase of just over 10%. A high prevalence of periarticular complaints is still observed, accounting for 71% of occupational diseases recorded, reported and recognised in 2005. Asbestos-related conditions are the second most important cause of occupational diseases, accounting for 14.5% of the total.
