Latin American trade unions to protest at the borders of Honduras

July 3rd: Unions and other social movements are meeting at the borders of Honduras to condemn the recent coup d’etat and to show their solidarity with the Honduran people.

In a coordinated action with the Global Union Federations (GUF) in Latin America, unions and other social movements are organising protests around the borders of Honduras. The joint protest is taking place on the 3rd of July at 11:00 local time, more specifically in El Amatillo (El Salvador), Los Tres Pasos de Frontera (Nicaragua) and Izabal (Guatemala).

The interim government keeps increasing the pressure on the demonstrators calling for the return of democracy and the president Manuel Zelaya. To keep the people in the dark, the media and the internet are being controlled by the interim regime. Violence is increasing, especially on the leaders of the unions and the social movements organising the demonstrations.

“We’re facing an ever intensifying violence; Two have died and thousands have been injured so far. On top of this, trade union leaders are being arrested”, says a union leader in Honduras.

Together with unions from other GUFs in the region, the BWI affiliated SOICESS and SIGMOOS from El Salvador, SINCS and FESITRASMMAR from Guatemala as well as FITCM from Nicaragua will be present. The BWI regional representative will be participating in Guatemala.
