ACT NOW! Solidarity Campaign El Salvador for ILO conventions

In a message addressed to the Minister of Labour and Social Welfare of the Republic of El Salvador, the BWI is concerned about the non respect of international conventions of the International Labour Organization (ILO). The BWI has organized an online campaign and sent a letter on 9 March 2010. Act NOW!

The ILO Convention 87, despite having been ratified in 2006, still has no practical application. For example, there are still dismissals of workers who try to form unions. In recent years the government and employers were indifferent to the demands of workers and to their demonstrations

The BWI regional representative for Latin America and the Caribbean has met with the Minister in August 2009, where he spoke of the importance of promoting and upholding freedom of association as the best way to achieve social justice and equity.

In addition, the BWI and the ITUC demanded recently to the ministry of Labour to take all necessary legal steps so that the organization in question receives the endorsement of the labor authorities and can operate within the law and in the frame of the international conventions 87 and 98.

According to recent information received from the Union of Construction Workers (SUTC) in El Salvador, a fraternal organization of the BWI, the labor authorities did not accept the documents and the procedures of their General Assembly on January 9, 2010.
