The Building and Wood Workers International congratulates the workers at the IKEA distribution plant in Perrydale, Maryland in voting 183 to 119 (61%) for a union. This victory is the result of not only the workers courage but also due to the commitment of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAMAW), an affiliate of BWI in the United States.
“Last July, the workers at the IKEA/Swedwood plant in Danville voted yes, and now the IKEA workers in Perrydale have done the same thing,” stated Ambet Yuson, General Secretary of BWI. He continued, “The courageous decision of the workers is indicative of the important role that trade unions play in ensuring job security and safety in the work place.”
Similar to anti-union strategies in Danville, the management at the IKEA plant attempted to thwart the Machinist’s effort. Just days before the meeting, the company held a “captive audience meeting” threatening the workers that they would be replaced if they “conducted work stoppages.” Nevertheless, the workers’ commitment for decent work, equity, and justice prevailed.
BWI congratulates the Machinists in this new victory and will continue to support the Machinists in any their organizing efforts of IKEA workers in the United States.
