"The BWI believes the election was a further sign in the progress of Burma during the last few years, but continues to caution that much still needs to be done," said Apolinar Tolentino, regional representative for Asia and the Pacific. The people of Burma have spoken and demanded greater transparency and democracy in their government, with Aung Sun Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy winning at least 43 out of the 44 seats they contested in the recent by-elections.

Tolentino added: "This result will have positive steps in Burma’s development and commends the bravery of the women and men of Burma in making their voices heard, despite threats of reprisal."

As the Federation of Trade Unions Burma stated “the faltering steps taken by all parties that want lasting peace, reconciliation and change towards a modern society in Burma has taken another step. The spirits of the people and the country are high. This momentum must be pushed forward to another level.”

The BWI will continue working alongside the FTUB and other organisations committed to the continuing development of Burma into a free and democratic country.
