The European trade union movement: Between national isolationism and counter-offensive

For Vasco Pedrina, BWI vice-president for Europe, “it is time for us to re-examine our strategy, if we do not want to watch an irreversible decline of the European trade union movement.” Pedrina’s paper looks at the present trade union paralysis in Europe undermining the basis for solidarity. It also focuses on key issues like the introduction of a minimum wage policy and the importance of trade union coordination of collective bargaining policies at sectoral levels, the struggle against wage dumping, the dismantling of workers’ rights, the need for a union strategy towards the Fiscal Pact and for a coordinated European trade union action.
