The II Trade Union Assembly on Labour and the Environment, bringing together over 200 trade unions delegates from across the globe, began on Monday 11 June in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil for 3 days. The event is being held within the framework of Rio+20, the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development.
BWI is represented at this assembly by a great delegation from all regions and has contributed to the discussion in the panels.
For Marion Hellman deputy General Secretary of BWI, the issue of sustainable development / climate change has occupied a paramount importance. This does not simply affect the future of humankind on Earth but also has clear implications on how industries will be transformed jobs created and destroyed, and labour standards can be applied. Decent Work should not be ignored in this industrial, policy, labour market and governance transformation.
The II Trade Union Assembly on Labour and the Environment, organized by ITUC-TUCA and Sustainlabour, will draw to a close on 13 June with the publication of a final resolution jointly drafted by all the trade unionists attending the event.
