Ana da Conceicao Pedro Garcia, general secretary of Sindicato Nacional da Industria dos Material de Constracao Madeira e Afins, SNIMCMA in Angola passed away on 26 June 2012. Ana Garcia was also a member of BWI Africa and Middle East regional executive committee and well known in the trade union movement as she served in various BWI and former IFBWW committees. For BWI general secretary Ambet Yuson: "Ana inspired many women in her work as general secretary in Angola and was the only woman to occupy this highest office in her time as a visionary who founded SNIMCMA a trade union for workers in building materials and woods and SCIGICILA an independent national centre."
Ana was indeed a dedicated trade union leader for Angola and the continent of Africa. She was also instrumental in fighting for workers and women’s rights in global foras. Ana was also a former member of the ILO Governing Body, former Executive member of ICFTU Afro and ITUC Africa and is Former Regional representing Southern Africa, former Women’s Committee Chairperson for IFBWW and BWI Africa and Middle East Region and Vice Chairperson for International Women Committee of BWI Globally.
As a peace champion, a revolutionary of her time and a freedom fighter Ana served Angola during the liberation struggle as a member of MPLA Party with dedication and pride, which led to peace and freedom in Angola.
BWI extended sincere condolences to Ana's family and to SNIMCMA members.
