BWI and Global Unions say Stop impunity in Russia, Labour is part of the Team!

Gathering outside the Mission of the Russian Federation in Geneva, the BWI and other Global Union federations, ITUC, IUF, PSI strongly protested against the unquantifiable human cost in exploitation and abuse of construction workers, including thousands of migrant workers. For BWI general secretary Ambet Yuson: “The BWI is appalled that beyond the record price tag of an estimated cost of $50 billion, the Sochi Winter Olympic games beginning in the Russian Federation tomorrow are tainted with workers’ blood.”

The demonstrators strongly protested against the impunity of workers’ exploitation which has led to the death of 60 construction workers in the lead to the 2014 Sochi Winter Games Olympics. The abuses range from very low wages - 14,000 and 19,200 rubles ($455 to $605) per month and non-payment of wages for several months, excessive hours with few days off, overcrowded housing, inadequate food, and unlawful detentions and hasty deportations of migrants.

Russia stealthily passed in June 2013 its FIFA Law “On the Preparation and Staging of the 2018 FIFA World Cup and 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup in Russian Federation and the Amendment of Certain Russian Federal Legislative Acts № 108-FZ”, which cancelled numerous labour standards and gave employers free rein.

In a letter to President Putin handed over to the Russian Federation mission today, BWI general secretary stresses: “I urge you to end modern slavery and these blatant violations to international labour standards that have occurred in the build up to the Sochi Winter Olympic games. We wish to remind you that as a member of the International Labour Organisation (ILO), you have an obligation to respect fundamental human rights enshrined in ILO standards. “

Among the other Global Unions present, the International trade Union Confederation (ITUC), Public Services International (PSI), and IUF.
