ACT NOW! Police destroys trade union offices in Albania

BWI affiliate in Albania, the Trade Union Federation of Building, Wood and Public Services (FSNDSH) as well as the Union of Independent Trade Unions of Albania (BSPSH) and the Confederation of Trade Unions of Albania (KSSH) were expelled from their headquarters on 1st of August 2007. The BWI has denounced this expulsion and has launched a solidarity campaign. Sign BWI letter to the Prime Minister!

According to the information received from FSNDSH, all trade union property and documents were destroyed. The police appeared without notice and staff were prevented from entering the building. The police were enforcing a court decision involving property seized by the former communist government.

In a letter to the prime minister, Sali Berisha, BWI General Secretary urged to intervene immediately in order to enable trade unions to resume their daily activities. Anita Normark said "For many years now the trade union movement has been protesting with regard to the persisting threats of expropriation and police occupation of trade union premises." In July 2006, the BWI called on the prime minister to start a dialogue with the Albanian trade union movement to find a solution which would respect both the jurisdiction of the country and the right of trade unions to function in order to safeguard the continuity of the social dialogue in Albania. Normark added "Both the Minister of Justice and the Minister of Labour and Social Affairs had pledged to find alternative solutions to the need for trade union premises."

BWI Action
Dear Prime Minister, Once again, we are concerned about the present situation in Albania with the police destroying trade union premises and documents and forcing trade union members to leave the building. For many years now the trade union movement has been protesting with regard to the persisting threats of expropriation and police occupation of trade union premises. In July 2006, the Minister of Justice and the Minister of Labour and Social Affairs had pledged to find alternative solutions to the need for trade union premises. We are therefore appealing to you to intervene immediately and personally in order to enable trade unions to resume their daily activities.
