The BWI and ILO will organize activities to diffuse information in the region, to raise awareness on the problem and the means to eradicate forced labour.
Both organisations commit to organize these vulnerable workers and raise awareness on their fundamental rights at work, particularly in Bolivia and Peru.
Forced labour in the wood and forestry industry exists in the Andean countries especially in Peru and Bolivia. As workers face different types of exploitation, they are very vulnerable.
This is the first agreement signed between a Global Union Federation and the ILO regarding forced labour.
The agreement was signed between BWI regional representative for Latin America and the Caribbean, Vicente Carrera, and the director of the ILO subregional office for Andean countries, Ricardo Hernández Pulido.
