"I am very concerned about millions of migrant workers from Africa moving to Europe and confined in Libya in slavery in our 21st Century", said Piet Matosa, Vice-President of the BWI. The AFRECO regional committee held its meeting in Durban on 28 November 2017.

The deputy president of the BWI, Dietmar Schäfers added: "We are living in a world where the rich are getting richer and the poor people poorer. As trade unions, we must stand and fight against this situation".

Schäfers also pointed out: "I am very proud that Piet Matosa, president of AFRECO, is running as deputy president of the BWI". AFRECO proposed a resolution for a third deputy president of BWI.

AFRECO adopted important resolutions to be submitted to the BWI World Board. The most important one is the resolution on the amendment of BWI statutes to accommodate a third Deputy President at global level and Africa has proposed its candidate Piet Matosa, current president of AFRECO and NUM South Africa.

For BWI General Secretary Ambet Yuson: "Africa and Middle East is a vibrant region for the BWI, and as such, it is great that Africa is hosting the BWI 4th Congress in Durban".
