BRAZIL: Masisa and Arauco union networks gather together to discuss trade unions’ strategies and plan actions for the next period

FETRACONSPAR hosted in its headquarters in Curitiba - Brazil, the meeting of unions of Arauco and Masisa workers. The meeting was held on August 14th and 15th and was attended by trade union leaders from Brazil, Chile and Uruguay.

Before the beginning of the meeting there was a minute of silence in honor to Antônio Natalio Basso of USIMRA Argentina, who passed away this year.

The unions presented the situation of the sector in the region and pointed out, among other things, the political-economic crisis in Brazil, the growth of outsourced work and labor reform in Chile, and advances of social dialogue in Uruguay on the one hand, but on the other hand difficulty in organizing temporary workers. They also discussed the history of the companies, the strategies of the companies to face the crisis that impacts the countries and the union’s strategies for the negotiation of collective bargain agreements.

The meeting was also attended by Yngve Daoson, of the Swedish Union GS, who highlighted the need for international trade union networks in the context of globalization as a tool for workers organization and demand for sustainable management of forests considering climate change.

Subsequently the unions dedicated themselves to elaborate and sign a Charter of Principles, an Information Matrix and a plan of action for the International Trade Union Network of Workers in Masisa's Industries in Latin America and for the International Trade Union Network of Arauco workers.
