As of today, the tally of COVID-19 has infected 115,800 people and killed 4,200 worldwide. Many countries specially in Europe have seen sudden increases of infection and deaths in the past 7 days. All the regions of the world are now affected and 102 countries have reported cases. However, we also take note that there are countries that have zero or low-level infection.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) has now characterised the outbreak as a “pandemic” and this global health challenge is also a concern for the trade union movement. In coordination with the other Global Unions, we would like to inform our affiliates and partners of the following:
BWI is cancelling its multi-regional conferences and meetings for the period of March to April 2020. Meetings and activities in May maybe held on a case to case basis.
BWI staff travel will be suspended except for essential missions approved by the General Secretary.
Regional activities shall be subjected to risk assessment by the Regional Representative for due consideration of the General Secretary.
BWI HQ and all other Offices shall prepare contingency plans including on arrangements for work from home and on continuing communications within the secretariat and with the Affiliates.
Another advisory will be issued by 1st of April 2020 to consider the next planning horizon of 16 May until 30 June due the fact that the situation is fast-changing.
Thank you.
Sincerely yours,
Albert Emilio Yuson
General Secretary
