The BWI and Bayanihan ng Manggagawa sa Konstruksyon ng Qatar (BMKQ) made history on Friday when they jointly organised a workshop to celebrate International Women’s Day in Qatar.

Dubbed as “Women (Only) Night Out”, close to thirty women migrant leaders representing six (6) communities---Filipino, Nepalese, Kenyan, Nigerian, Indonesian, and Ghanaian in Qatar participated in the event. They shared their perspectives, experiences, and challenges they face in working in Qatar.

In addition, they discussed how to increase women’s participation in migrant community organizations and build women leaders in migrant communities. About 90 percent of the Qatar population are migrant workers.

In her opening remarks, the Chairperson of BMKQ Women Committee, Mags Laja, pointed out “Today, women members in our community organizations continue to increase, but I must tell you sisters; this is a result of resolute action. Women will never be a part of the table unless we organize ourselves. In most cases, as some would tell, women must create our own table. We are mainly on the side-lines, not having the power to be a part of decision-making. We need to take our space.”

In response, one African participant introduced herself as an, “Activist for women and a voice for the voiceless”.

Another participant from the Philippines stated, “I am a single parent to six children and I am strong as a parent and a leader of our community here in Qatar”.

One of the issues discussed was BWI’s global campaign to stop gender-based violence and sexual harassment in the workplace and in communities.

This is the first time that BWI and BMKQ, the association of Filipino migrant workers in the construction sector of Qatar, organised an event in Qatar to mark the yearly commemoration. The organizers hope to continue the tradition now that the fire has been lit.
