BWI condemned the assault against Ronny Buckley and Paul Tzimas, officials of the Construction Forestry Maritime Mining and Energy Union who were attacked by seven unidentified individuals. The incident took place at a Melbourne construction site, after the two CFMEU members responded to complaints over occupational health and safety.

“As we send our warmest solidarity to comrades Ronny and Paul as they rest and recover from their injuries, we condemn the harm inflicted on them in the strongest possible terms. We call on the authorities to conduct a swift investigation of the incident and deliver the perpetrators to justice,” BWI General Secretary Ambet Yuson said.

“Across the world, trade unionists face threats, harassment and even violence for simply trying to keep workers safe on the job and ensure a decent life for all. We know that these threats and assaults – whether they take place in the Philippines, Central America, Pakistan, or here in Australia – are designed to stop us from doing our trade union work. We will not stop and be intimidated. We will continue to raise our voices against all forms of harassment and violence against workers,” Yuson added.

According to reports, Buckley was knocked unconscious with a piece of timber and kicked while unconscious on the ground. He was admitted to a hospital with a fractured eye socket, amongst other injuries. Meanwhile, Tzimas suffered bruises to his face and body after being punched and kicked.

A large protest took place at the site, which was shut down until further notice.
