BWI on the passing of Rajabu Mwondi, a "baobab" of the Kenyan labour movement

We in BWI are deeply saddened to learn of the death of Rajabu Mwondi, General Secretary of the KUPRIPUPA. On 16 August 2023, he returned to his creator after succumbing to an illness while receiving treatment at the Aga Khan Hospital in Kisumu.


Rajabu was a dedicated leader and pillar in Kenya's labor movement, serving as Chairperson of the Central Organization of Trade Unions-Kenya (COTU-K) for nearly two decades. He was a staunch supporter of fair wages, safe working conditions, and the general well-being of Kenyan workers. His insights, compassion, and unwavering efforts improved the lives of countless working people, propelling the Kenyan labour movement to new heights.


Rajabu was an active member of BWI's Africa and Middle East Regional Executive Committee. BWI recalls him best for his perseverance in the face of adversity, humility in the face of triumph, and unifying charisma. His legacy will always be a source of inspiration and dedication to the cause of workers' rights and welfare in the area and around the world. We shall honour him by carrying the flame of his passion and commitment forward.
