BWI Statement on the 2023 International Workers’ Memorial Day

In memory of workers who passed away, the Building and Wood Workers' International, BWI, and its affiliates around the world are mobilising on this International Workers' Memorial Day to promote worker's right to a safe and healthy work environment as a fundamental right.

Last year, the International Labour Organization (ILO) recognised occupational health and safety as a fundamental right at work, reaffirming the importance of protecting workers' health and safety. BWI welcomed this recognition as a step forward in the struggle for workers' rights. However, we acknowledge that there is still much work to be done, as workers continue to face hazardous working conditions without adequate resources, training, or protective equipment.

Therefore, this year, BWI affiliates highlight ways to put the right to safe and healthy workplaces into practice through the theme "MAKE IT HAPPEN," celebrating and raising awareness on occupational health and safety (OHS) as a fundamental right. This week, our members have done their part by holding more than 150 joint OSH training, safety and health inspections at worksites with employers committed to the same right.

BWI calls on governments and employers worldwide to take action by prioritising the safety and health of workers by providing adequate resources, training, and protective equipment. BWI urges the strengthening of legislation and enforcement mechanisms to protect workers from hazardous working conditions. We also stand in solidarity with all workers and their families impacted by workplace accidents and illnesses.

Let us remember the workers who lost their lives and/or were injured on the job and recommit ourselves to the fight for safe and healthy workplaces for all workers.
