In preparation for the International Day of Forests (IDF) on March 21, the Major Groups participating in the United Nations Forum on Forests agreed on common messages to “celebrate” the IDF. The theme of the 2020 Day is “forests and biodiversity”.
Ambet Yuson, BWI General Secretary stressed that in the most recent ILO sectoral meeting, held in May of 2019, a consensus conclusion of workers, employers, and governments was that working in forests remains far too dangerous for forest workers.
“Unless member states of the United Nations Forum on Forests (UNFF) take their responsibilities seriously and align national laws, regulations and enforcement with international standards, forest workers will have little to celebrate. The International Day of Forests (IDF) will become a second Workers’ Memorial Day.”
