Workers and trade union officials took action gathered at Lima's International Convention Center as the International Olympic Committee met inside.
On 14 September 2017, as the International Olympic Committee (IOC) held its meeting behind closed doors, workers and trade union leaders gathered in Lima, Peru to demand justice for South Korean construction workers.
The construction workers that have built the Pyeongchang 2018 venues and infrastructure are demanding an end to deaths in mega sports events, immediate action on unpaid wages and an end to attacks on trade unionists.
“The IOC has benefited hugely from the weak legal protections that characterise the South Korean construction industry on Pyeongchang 2018”, said BWI General Secretary Ambet Yuson.
“Wherever they go, however, workers and trade unionists are willing to stand up and take action. We salute the workers here in Lima who have taken a stand, and I know the KFCITU is grateful for the solidarity shown by the BWI family in Peru through this action.”
The action involved workers and trade union leaders from SINTRACESANLO, SUFTACAP, CGTP, FETRACEPE and FETRAMAP and other organisations. The workers used a minivan prominently displaying large banners and megaphones to communicate the situation of Pyeongchang 2018, as well as handing out over 1500 flyers and discussing with those passing by the International Convention Center of Lima.
