Malawi: BCCEAWU Elects First Woman President at its 5th Quadrennial Congress

The Building Construction Civil Engineering and Allied Workers Union (BCCEAWU) of Malawi held its fifth quadrennial congress on 8 January 2017 in the city of Blantyre. This is the first time in the history of BCCEAWU that a female president is elected. 

The delegates were exited to exercise their right to vote and contest for the positions of their choice. They have waited for this opportunity for three years as this was due in 2013. 

The most memorable moment came when a woman president was elected for the union. 

Were elected for the next four years: 

President: Wezzie Grace Mkandawire 

Vice-President: Charles Walter 

Secretary General: John Obongo Mwafulirwa 

Deputy Secretary General: George Chikopa 

Treasurer General: Marcellin Lukhere 

Deputy : Mukaniwa Nyoni
