MENA: Women workers strengthen regional cooperation on gender and labour rights, climate justice
In an effort to share challenges and opportunities for women from BWI sectors in the Middle East and North Africa, a regional meeting of the Women's Network, a collaboration between the BWI MENA region and Friedrich Ebert Foundation (FES), took place in Jordan on 6 and 7 June 2024. The meeting saw the participation of 19 women from Jordan, Bahrain, Tunisia, Algeria, Lebanon, and Palestine.
During the event, the participants discussed various critical topics, including the ILO Convention 190 and Recommendation 206 which aim to eliminate violence and harassment in the world of work. Participants pondered on the significance of the Convention, developed strategies, and produced an action plan that will combat violence and discrimination and create a safer and more equitable world of work.
The network members were also educated and trained on "just transition," the effects of climate change on working women, and on sustainable and fair practices, particularly in the male-dominated construction and wood industries. The event underscored the importance of solidarity and collective action among women workers in the MENA region. By sharing experiences and strategies, the participants aim to strengthen their efforts in promoting gender equality and labour rights in industries where BWI is present at.
Finally, the Women's Network meeting allowed participants to highlight the ongoing challenges and opportunities for women while expressing the commitment to implement strategies and action plans to advance the rights and interests of women in MENA.
