After several years of hard work, the National Trade Union of Construction and Services of Guatemala (SINCS-G) finally inaugurated its first training facility for construction workers. The Training Center for the Construction and Agricultural sector - Nilton Freitas, named after the current BWI Regional Representative for Latin America and the Caribbean, was inaugurated last 25 February 2020. The event was attended by Saúl Méndez, Secretary General of SUNTRACS Panama and President of the BWI Regional Committee, and Freitas himself.
SINCS-G said that the training facility is ready to host the first group of workers who would begin their professional training on June 2020. 200 workers (bricklayers, blacksmiths, carpenters and electricians) are expected to participate in the said training which will be supervised by the University of San Carlos de Guatemala, a training partner of SINCS-G.
SINCS-G thanked the Quetzaltenango Ministry for providing the funds and land for the construction of the said training facility.
The union said that through their partnership with the Guatemalan government, which is forging stronger labor ties with the United States and Canada, it is confident that its first batch of trained construction workers can easily become part of the North American labor sector.
