The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM)signed a 1-year wage agreement today with Lafarge-Holcim South Africa. This agreement will be effective from the 1st of January 2016 and endure until 31 December 2016.
The NUM wishes to express its sincere gratitude to its members at Lafarge-Holcim South Africa for the manner in which they behaved during the negotiation period until they gave us the mandate to sign this agreement. Our members are excited and they gave us the mandate to sign the agreement.
The NUM had to use its maturity and skill in engaging the company robustly which then resulted in such a beneficial agreement. This is a substantive agreement that also include Salary increases, Shift allowance, Standby allowance, housing programme and other issues.
The collective agreement includes the following:
1. Wage increase:
An across the board wage increase of 8%, effective 01 January 2016
2. Shift allowance:
The shift allowance will be R1 370-00, applicable to employees who work shifts only.
3. Standby allowance:
The standby allowance will be R1580-00, applicable to employees who get to be on stand-by.
4. Housing programme:
The company recognises the importance of providing decent housing to its employees. A once-off special assistance Capital grant of R70 000 towards the cost of acquiring or building a house shall be granted.
Year 1-2
A grant value of R70 000 (fixed)
Year 3-5
An R70 000 plus the annual average inflationary rate as determined on 31 December of the previous. This rate to be applied to the following year.
5. Amended conditions
The company has agreed to give the employees the option to acquire or build a house close to their place of origin or close to the place of work, whichever they deemed appropriate for their personal circumstances.
Should the employees be married whilst employed by the company, each employee will qualify individually for the grant.
Employees who are 53 years and older will granted a special assistance as per the Housing policy.
NUM members at Lafarge-Holcim South Africa are quite pleased and excited that the wage agreement was concluded without any violence, intimidation and loss of life.
