A construction worker was rushed to the Royal Perth Hospital on Friday 20 October 2017 after a crane collapsed onto power lines at a worksite in Bayswater. It is believed that the man was working on a tunnel project near the Bayswater Train Station, which is part of the Forrestfield-Airport Link, a joint venture project being managed by the Italian construction multinational Salini Impregilo and Australian firm NRW.
While it was initially believed that the man injured was a crane operator, it was later revealed that the man was a crane chaser (known in Australia as a “dogger”). The role of the chaser is to guide the crane and attach loads to the machine, however things went awry when the crane collided with a 132,000 volt power line.
The man, who is in his 30s, is currently believed to be in a stable condition. The appropriate authorities, including the Australian occupational safety and health regulator WorkSafe, are currently investigating the matter.
