BWI condemns police violence against protesting Indonesian workers

 

Across Indonesia, trade unionists and students who took to the streets to protest the passage of the Omnibus Law on Job Creation were met with arrests, violence and harassment from state security forces. The attacks on Indonesian workers took place as the international labour movement marked the World Day for Decent Work on 7 October.

On the eve of the World Day for Decent Work, Pakistani trade unionists organised protest actions across Islamabad, the country’s capital, to pressure the government to implement an upward revision of wages and benefits to offset the rise of inflation in the country, which is the highest-recorded in the world at 10-14 percent. As a response to the Annual Meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank this month, BWI will hold a webinar on 16 November to discuss ways to introduce active and transparent monitoring mechanisms to ensure the compliance of projects financed by international financial institutions (IFIs) to internationally-recognised and accepted labour standards. The Swedish Trade Union Confederation (LO), the Federation of Salaried Employees in Industry and Service (PTK) and the Confederation of Swedish Enterprise last week failed to reach an agreement on Sweden’s law on employment protection (LAS), shelving the idea of a better employment agreement between the parties and giving employers more power in the dismissal of workers.Read more...
