Covid-19 exacerbates precarious work in West and Central Africa

 

“Workers in precarious employment relationships are exposed to greater COVID-19 risks.”

This was the conclusion reached by BWI affiliates in West and Central Africa as they discussed ways on how to address COVID-19’s impact on the already dilapidating situation of precarious workers in the region.

On 5 November, the BWI-affiliated Trade Union of Workers of A.W. Faber Castell in Peru (SUTFACAP) and Trade Union of ARTESCO Workers (SUTRART) joined thousands of workers in a massive protest called by the country’s Trade Union Confederation (CGTP) to oppose the suspension of collective bargaining processes, criminalization of trade union work and other anti-union schemes. Through an Omnibus Law, the Turkish government seeks to expand the coverage of fixed-term labor contracts covering workers who are below 25 and above 50 years of age and undermine their right to severance pay.
