Eight hundred and fifty delegates and guests attended the 16th congress of the National Union of Mine Workers – NUM, in Boksburg, South Africa on 20 – 22 June 2018.
“Rebuild and re-engineer NUM towards reclaiming its historical posture,” was the theme of the Congress. The delegates adopted several resolutions to build, unite and continue to fight for decent work for all its members.
“Six months ago, the BWI held its Global Congress in Durban where NUM along with the Building Construction and Allied Workers' Union were our gracious hosts. I would like to once again thank the leadership and members of NUM who provided us with tremendous support. The strong presence of NUM was clearly evident throughout the Congress,” said Ambet Yuson General secretary of the BWI who addressed the Congress delegates.
Crecentia Mofokeng, Regional Representative for Africa and Middle East Region, was also present at the Congress.
The congress elected the following leaders of the union: President---Joseph Montisetsi; Deputy President---Phillip Vilakazi; General Secretary---David Siphunzi; Deputy General Secretary---Makgabo Mabapa; Treasurer General---Mpho Phakedi; National Chairperson Education---Helene
The former NUM leadership including the President of the Country Cyril Ramaphosa also attended the Congress.
