The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) has called a protected strike for all members working in operations of LafargeHolcim around the country. NUM has announced that the strike, which began on the night shift on Thursday 11 February 2016, will continue indefinitely until the union demands are met.
As many as 2,000 workers at LafargeHolcim are expected to strike until wage and benefit increases are met at the South Africa operations of the world’s biggest cement maker. The NUM demands are as follows:
Salary increase of 13%
Standard pay rate for all workers doing the same jobs
Acting allowance demand is 35% of the basic salary
Housing grant of 100 000 to be concluded with wage negotiations.
