20 November 2018: Today in Seoul, South Korea, the Korean Federation of Construction Industry Trade Union (KFCITU) held a photo exhibit at the National Assembly showcasing a series of photos highlighting women working in the construction industry in South Korea. The exhibit is a collection of photos submitted by photo journalists, freelancers, and others as part of the photo contest.

“Women are increasingly part of the labour market in the construction industry in South Korea, but often our work is overlooked,” stated Kim Kyung Shin, Vice-President of KFCITU and also Chair of BWI Asia Pacific Regional Women’s Committee. She continued: “The goal of this photo exhibit is to show that we are not only skilled, but we can do the job. Our gender should not be a barrier.”

For two years, the KFCITU has organized such an exhibit but this is the first time it has been held in the National Assembly with the support of both National Assembly and the National Assembly Children and Women's Human Rights Policy Forum.

In addition, the exhibit also included photos of women in construction in Macedonia, United States, Sweden, Cambodia, India, and Zimbabwe. These photos were contributed by BWI.

“It was important for us to also highlight women working in construction in other countries. BWI ‘s contribution of photos of women working as Ironworkers, Painters, Engineers, Bricklayers, and Carpenters from was an excellent way for us to do this,” said Kim.

The union is committed to continue with both the photo context exhibit in an annual basis.
