Statement on Fatality at Al Wakrah Stadium

The Building and Wood Workers’ International has been informed by the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy in Qatar that a 23-year old Nepalese construction migrant worker was killed yesterday morning, the 14th of August, while working on the project site of Al Wakram Stadium, one of the facilities for the 2022 World Cup games.

The family has been notified by both the Supreme Committee and the contractors. The BWI expresses its deepest condolences to the family of the victim.

The BWI has been asked by the Supreme Committee to participate in its independent investigation of the nature and cause of the accident as part of our joint cooperation agreement.

BWI has also been in contact with BESIX, a construction company based in Belgium with which BWI has an international framework agreement. SIXCO, a subsidiary of BESIX is one of the joint ventures responsible for the Al Wakrah stadium project. They are also investigating the accident.

The BWI is committed to working with all partners and stakeholders in Qatar to ensure the safety and health of construction workers in Qatar.
