Trade union solidarity with Ukraine
Carrying the theme “A day of trade union solidarity with Ukraine and its trade unions,” the event eulogised all those who suffered from the invasion. It also discussed the devastating consequences of the Russian military invasion on the lives of Ukrainian workers, and its political, economic, social and ecological impacts on the country.
The immediate challenges Ukrainian trade unions face was also tackled in the online forum, together with the need to strengthen further international solidarity efforts to support Ukrainian workers affected by the conflict, including the countless people who were displaced and forced to flee from the war.
Since the start of the conflict, BWI and its affiliates stood with the Ukrainian people. Together with its Ukrainian affiliate, PROFBUD, and the European Federation of Building and Wood Workers (EFBWW), BWI has created a solidarity fund to provide humanitarian aid, food and shelter to all Ukrainian working people affected by the war.
Reconstruction is also another concern. Even if the armed conflict is far from over, the trade unions are already developing programs on how to train citizens as part of the preparations for the rebuilding efforts.
“We know we are not alone in this fight for freedom, peace and democracy. During this terrible year, international solidarity and support mean a lot to our members more than ever. In many ways, they are live-savers. Your solidarity gave us hope to look to the future positively. We have to rebuild our country and we have to start doing it now,” PROFBUD President Vasyl Andreyev said.
On 24 February 2022, Russian military forces invaded Ukraine and violated its territorial integrity as a sovereign and democratic state. One year has passed, and the Ukrainian working people are still fighting. While it has been a year of suffering and loss, it was also a year of bravery, unity and solidarity on the part of the Ukrainian working people, trade unions and the global labour movement.
