The Building and Wood Workers’ International expresses its support to its Turkish affiliates who have issued a joint unified statement condemning the recent failed military coup and a call for workers’ rights, democracy and peace. The BWI joins its affiliates in condemning the military coup attempt and expresses its sympathy to those killed and injured.

The country had been hit hard in the past year by a series of terrorist attacks and the recent military coup attempt by a faction within the military has made the political situation in the country more precarious.  The BWI is concerned by the recent actions taken by President Erdogan in response to the military coup as it appears that he is using the failed coup to consolidate his authority.

“It is critical that President Erdogan adheres to the principles of democracy, human rights and rule of law rather than installing further restrictions against trade unionists, the press, human rights activists, and members of the political opposition,” stated Ambet Yuson, General Secretary of BWI.
