On the occasion of International Workers' Memorial Day, representatives of the Trade Union of Workers in Construction and Building Materials of Serbia (SGIGM), visited workers at the factory “Zmaj” in the town of Smederevo highlighting the importance of prevention of risks at work and the important role of health and safety representatives at the work place.

Also, other public events with participation of BWI affiliates from the construction and building materials sector were held, demanding from the employers and government to pay more attention to health and safety at work.

As in previous years the Ministry of labour, employment, veterans and social affairs of Serbia granted special awards to companies and individuals for their outstanding achievements in the field of safety and health at work.

At the central manifestation Aleksandar Vulin, minister of labour, employment, veteran and social affairs said: "In Serbia, last year 24 workers lost their lives in the workplace and we must do everything to make this figure in the future lower. The injuries and fatalities could be avoided and some companies create safe working conditions so that they did not have any fatal injury."

This year's International Workers Memorial Day was dedicated to stress at work, and the national coordinator for Serbia of the International Labor Organization, Jovan Protic, said that the countries that are serious about statistics calculated to lose serious amounts of money and resources because of stress at work.
