World Day Against child labour: Interview with a former child labourer now working as a teacher in BWI school in Bihar state

18 April 2016 12:58

My name is Urmila Kumari and I started my life as a child labourer in a plywood factory.

With the help of Hind Khet Mazdoor Panchayat union, I was pulled out from work and was brought to the BWI/HKMP run Belgachhi residential school.

I completed my education here and I also received support from CHILD LEARN in form of scholarship.

After completing my education, I am now employed as a teacher at this school.

When I started my life as a child labourer, I never thought that I could have become teacher at the child labour school.

I am very thankful to all those who supported me and brought about this change.

On the occasion of World Day Against Child Labour, I would like to say.

Best place for children’s work is at school and not any worksite.

If my entire childhood would have been spent at a worksite, I would not have been able to come this far.

My message to everyone is: Decent Work for Adults, Decent Education for Children
