Africa and Middle East: BWI Regional Women’s Committee adopts measures for women’s empowerment in unions

The BWI Africa and Middle East (AME) Regional Women’s Committee (RWC) held its annual meeting in Abuja, Nigeria, on 16 October 2024, attended by sixteen women from nine affiliates across six countries. The discussions centred on women’s rights, gender equality, and the specific challenges faced by women workers in the region. The Committee members shared reports on efforts to strengthen unions through revitalisation, innovation, and solidarity across BWI sectors, celebrating women’s achievements from 2023 to 2024.

Significantly, the RWC addressed the impact of the conflict in Palestine on women’s security, family life, and employment, as well as the broader socio-economic consequences. Recognising the immediate role the RWC can play, the Committee resolved to urgently call for a ceasefire in Palestine and other conflict zones, while also initiating efforts to gather resources for humanitarian and rebuilding support.

The Committee reiterated the responsibilities of both RWC members and the BWI Secretariat in championing women’s rights. Discussions covered the BWI’s Gender Mainstreaming Framework, feedback on the proposed Policy Against Discrimination and Harassment, and themes for International Women’s Day 2025. “This Committee understands the urgency of women’s empowerment in Africa and the Middle East,” said RWC Chair Dr Fozert Mugabe, pledging the Committee’s continued commitment to advocating for women and shaping BWI’s work leading up to its next meeting in Rwanda next September.
