BWI kicks off women’s month with gender audit


To kick-off its week-long campaign to celebrate International Women’s Day on 8 March, BWI launched a Gender Audit to assess the institutionalisation of gender equality in affiliate trade unions and their programs, policies, resource management and leadership structure.

Using an online platform, BWI said that it hopes to identify the “best gender practices and policies” that can be replicated by affiliates in different regions, as well as gender gaps and bottlenecks which impede the promotion of gender equality and mainstreaming among trade unionists.  

The global union said that the audit is available in different languages and will run until June 2021. A comprehensive report will be released by the end of the year. 

The gender audit is part of BWI’s efforts to mark this year’s International Women’s Month.  Under the themes “Equal and Better Future for All” and “No Recovery without Gender Equality," BWI aims to promote COVID-19 recovery strategies and programs that address gender inequality, especially conditions that have resulted in women workers becoming more vulnerable to social burdens and the economic costs of the response to the pandemic.
