History

BWI works closely with the European Federation of Building and Wood Workers (EFBWW), the Nordic Federation of Building and Wood Workers (NFBWW), the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions (ICFTU) and the GUFs. BWI has a Special Consultative Status to the Economic and Social Committee of the United Nations and is engaged with international organisations such as the International Labour Organization (ILO), the International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO), the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO), the international employers' organizations, such as the Confederation of International Contractors' Associations (CICA) and the regional and international financial institutions such as the World Bank and World Trade Organization (WTO).

Building and Wood Workers International, BWI, is a Global Union Federation (GUF, formerly International Trade Secretariat), established in December 2005 between the International Federation of Building and Wood Workers, IFBWW, and the World Federation of Building and Woodworkers union.

The WFBW was the continuation of the International Federation of Christian Building and Woodworkers' Unions, constituted in Paris on 9 September 1937.

The IFBWW was the result of a merger in 1934 by the Building Workers International and Wood Workers International. The International Secretariat of Stone Masons, the International Secretariat of Painters and allied trades and the International Secretariat of Bricklayers have all subsequently joined the Federation.
