Your Excellency President of the Republic,

Very respectfully, on behalf of (your union), I am writing to Your Excellency to express our deep concern about the conditions in which, the judgment of the trial in second instance of the Excellency Former President of the Federative Republic of Brazil, Mr. Luis Inácio Lula da Silva, will take place on the 24th of this month.

As a trade union, we represent (___) members in the construction, wood, and forestry sector. With grave concerns, we have followed the case against the former President Lula from the beginning when the accusations came to light.

In this matter, we understand that methods and procedures used by prosecutors, investigators and judges are inconsistent with the principle of impartiality expected from the Justice. This is evident by the fact that a number of Brazilian government officials ranging from judges, prosecutors, and investigators are exercising discriminatory and coercive

powers against a law-abiding Brazilian citizen for their own political agenda.

In this regard, we ask to Your Excellency to convey with the other heads of the Brazilian State our concerns about the upcoming trial. The BWI is not alone. We are joined by international labour movement as well as broader civil society and a number of governments. We will be closely monitoring the developments of the trial which we believe is doubtful, since it lacks evidence, shows limited right of defense and, frighteningly, previously announced by those who will judge him and his direct assistants.

Once again, I would like to make a strong appeal to Your Excellency in your role as President, to intercede by all legal means at your disposal to ensure that Former President Luis Inacio Lula da Silva has a fair and proper trial, in accordance with all the international commitments assumed by the Brazilian State with the international community.
