Ghana: Women representation wins big in union election of new leaders
The BWI-affiliated General Construction, Manufacturing and Quarries Workers Union of the TUC Ghana (GCMQWU) recently concluded its 2nd Quadrennial Delegates' Conference. Held on 26 July 2024, at the GNAT Hall in Accra, the event carried the theme "Enhancing Occupational Health and Safety at the Workplace: The Role of the Union and Employees."
General Secretary Comfort Agambaa highlighted the severe impact of poor workplace safety and urged delegates to prioritise the physical and mental well-being of workers. She stated, “By fostering a healthy and safe work environment, the GCMQWU aims to improve employee productivity, reduce accidents, and lower costs associated with workplace injuries.”
A key highlight of the conference was the election of new union officers, with women trade unionists making significant strides in leadership by securing three out of seven positions in the union’s national structure. Agambaa was also re-elected as General Secretary with BWI extending its congratulations.
The National Youth Committee also saw significant women representation, with two out of five elected members being women. This empowerment of women demonstrates GCMQWU's commitment to progressively achieving gender balance and enhancing the capabilities of young and female union members and leaders.
The union’s conference concluded with a powerful message: "When Safety is First, You Last!” The GCMQWU remained steadfast in its advocacy for the rights and welfare of its members, with this conference marking a significant step towards a safer and healthier workplace for all.
