The Building and Wood Workers' International (BWI) and the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group (C40) have renewed their Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on addressing the challenges posed by climate change in cities and to promote a just transition within the construction industry. The agreement was signed on 1 September 2024, during the Clean Construction Learning Tour, organised by Unite the Union and BWI, with support from the C40 Cities VISIBLE project, in Glasgow, Scotland. Representatives from all three organisations were in attendance.

The renewed partnership continues the collaboration between labour and local authorities in advancing sustainable development and just transition proposals in the built environment. BWI, a global union representing over 12 million workers in 115 countries, is committed to protecting labour rights and improving working conditions. This mission aligns with C40’s Clean Construction Programme, which promotes the development of resource-efficient, resilient, and decarbonised buildings.

Together, BWI and C40 will work to ensure that the global transition to clean construction is both fair and inclusive, embedding social and environmental justice into climate action.

BWI General Secretary Ambet Yuson said that the reaffirmed partnership with C40 is pivotal in ensuring workers’ voices are heard in the global shift towards clean construction.

“We are not just building sustainable cities; we are shaping a greener future where climate justice and workers' rights are fundamentally linked,” Yuson said.
