Construction workers’ network capacitates trainers on OHS and CBA

 

In a three-day intensive capacity-building workshop on 29-31 August, BWI trade unionists from South Africa, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Mauritius, Mozambique and Zambia were capacitated as trainers and organisers on how to navigate occupational health and safety (OHS) and anti-asbestos campaigns in challenging workplaces. Alarmed at the growing number of work-related deaths in the span of two months, the Federation of Free Workers (FFW) called on the Philippines’ labour department to conduct a formal investigation on the matter and prevent similar incidents from happening again in the future.

An agreement was signed on 21 June between construction unions, FeNEAL, the Italian Federation of Construction and Allied Workers (FILCA), The Italian Federation of Wood, Building and Allied Workers (FILLEA), and the Italian Footballers’ Association and the Italian Football Coaches’ Association to promote the rights and dignity of workers employed at major sports infrastructure projects. BWI-affiliated trade unionists joined a protest action on 14 June at the Geneva International Conference Centre calling on the 10th Conference of Parties (COP) of the Rotterdam Convention to list and ban all hazardous chemicals and substances that are dangerous to the health of the working people.

Different networks and campaign groups working for the ban of asbestos at workplaces, including the Building and Woodworkers’ International (BWI), expressed their extreme disappointment with the secretariat of the Rotterdam Convention for allowing a pro-asbestos lobby group to participate as an observer in the Convention’s Conference of Parties (COP) held this year.
