SUNTRACS leads OHS campaign in Latin America and Caribbean

The National Union of Workers of Construction and Similar Industries in Panama (SUNTRACS) is leading BWI’s Global Alliance on Healthy and Safe Workplaces campaign in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC).

As of the last count, the union has inked 33 declarations with construction companies upholding the importance of occupational health and safety (OHS).

SUNTRACS actively participated in BWI’s observance of International Workers’ Memorial Day on 28 April. It conducted a month-long health and safety campaign marked by workers’ meetings, OHS trainings, and workplace inspections to ensure that COVID-19 measures at construction sites are fully observed.

“Health and safety is our right! SUNTRACS's strong commitment to uphold workplace health and safety will benefit many Panamanian workers,” said Gregorio Guerrel, head of SUNTRACS’ Occupational Health Secretariat.

The declarations are part of BWI and EFBWW’s global campaign to persuade the International Labour Organisation (ILO) to declare and recognise occupational health and safety (OHS) as a fundamental right of all workers.

Signed declarations from different parts of the world will be collected and submitted to the ILO in time for its annual International Labour Conference in June.
