BWI launches Stop Macho Culture Campaign Network

The Building and Woodworkers’ International (BWI) launched its Stop Macho Culture Campaign Network which aims to bring together its affiliates to ensure that both women and men workers share common values regarding elimination of all forms of discrimination, gender-based violence and harassment.

BWI also launched a campaign website to support the said initiative. It explained that it hopes to contribute to ending the “macho culture” on the construction sites, which includes bad jargon, social norms, and excluding behavior. BWI said that macho attitudes and behaviors also allow employers to push workers to take greater risks and ignore occupational health and safety rules.

BWI’s latest gender campaign also wants to raise public awareness on the macho culture in the construction industry, ensure a safe and gender-equal working environment in the construction industry, include gender clauses in collective bargaining agreements, and motivate more women workers to join trade unions and work in the construction industry.
