BWI on the Kuwaiti fire that killed 49 migrant workers

It is with profound sadness and a heavy heart that the Building and Wood Workers' International (BWI) extends its deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of the migrant workers who tragically lost their lives in the fire incident in Mangaf, Kuwait. This heartbreaking event has reportedly claimed the lives of at least 49 individuals, including many Indian nationals and three Filipinos. We stand in solidarity with all those affected by this devastating loss, offering our heartfelt sympathy and unwavering support during this difficult time.

We mourn the untimely deaths of these workers who, in pursuit of a better livelihood for their families, faced this tragic end far from their homes. Their sacrifice underscores the pressing need for better protection and conditions for migrant workers globally.

BWI joins its Indian and Philippine trade union affiliates in calling on the Kuwaiti government to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation into the circumstances that led to this catastrophe. It is crucial to determine if lapses in safety standards and measures contributed to the loss of these lives. Those found responsible for any negligence or failure to ensure the safety of the workers must be held accountable. 

Equally, we call on the Kuwaiti authorities to provide adequate reparations to the victims' families, including those who were injured by the fire. These families have not only lost their loved ones but also their primary source of support and security. Ensuring they receive just compensation is the least that can be done in the wake of such a tragedy. This incident starkly highlights the urgent need to secure and protect the rights of migrant workers. We strongly advocate for the implementation and enforcement of rigorous safety standards in workplaces and living quarters for all workers, particularly migrants who often find themselves in vulnerable situations. No worker should ever have to risk their life due to inadequate living conditions or unsafe work environments.
