The Building and Wood Workers' International (BWI) joined the 200 million-strong Council of Global Union (CGU) in expressing its solidarity with Elizabeth Tang, General Secretary of the International Domestic Workers' Federation (IDWF). Elizabeth was unjustly arrested by the Hong Kong police. While she is presently on bail, it is only valid until 24 April. Her passport continues to be held by the authorities and her bank account frozen despite no charges were filed against her.
The CGU firmly condemns the Hong Kong authorities' arbitrary arrest, and the travel and financial restrictions placed on Elizabeth.
Elizabeth, according to BWI General Secretary Ambet Yuson, is on the side of truth and justice. He reminded Hong Kong officials that an accusation is not proof of guilt, and that conviction is founded on the truth.
