Action Alert: International Women's Day 2024
The Building and Wood Workers’ International (BWI) will mark International Women’s Day with the theme “Hold the Line: Women Fighting for Democracy”
Join Us!
Starting on 1 March 2024, BWI will hold a week-long campaign to promote working women’s important roles in the fight for democracy in workplaces, unions, communities, and society at large. Fighting for democracy in workplaces and beyond is of paramount importance for women workers in the construction, building materials, wood, and forestry industries. Only through democracy and participation can we break the barriers hindering the realisation of human and labour rights and achieving equality.
Worldwide, democracies are incomplete without gender equality and human rights for women. As we celebrate women’s struggles and achievements on International Women's Day, let’s also honour all the brave and determined women workers who hold the line and fight for gender and social justice, and democracy. This International Women's Day, and every other day, let’s hold the line together!
Take Action!
We call on BWI affiliates to:
- Organise meetings with trade unionists on gender issues and women’s roles in the fight for democracy.
- Encourage trade union members to be creative online and offline in expressing their solidarity and support for our IWD campaign this year.
- Issue trade union statements to government leaders, policymakers, and media practitioners, emphasising that women are crucial in the fight for democracy.
Show Solidarity!
To show solidarity at the international level, we encourage BWI affiliates to:
- Mobilise women trade union members to take photos of themselves locking arms with one another (“hold the line”) and use BWI's interactive poster to publish the photo on social media, using the hashtags #WomenHoldTheLine and #WomenWorkers4Democracy.
- Invite trade union members to join BWI’s “Gender Equality Storytelling Caravan” on Facebook and Instagram. Follow BWI on Instagram: @bwiglobalunion.
- Invite women workers to share their stories of daily resistance on TikTok in any language, using the hashtags #WomenHoldTheLine and #WorkingWomen4Democracy.
