Doha: BWI holds 3rd Workers’ Football Cup, celebrates migrant workers’ contributions
In a vibrant celebration of migrant workers’ rights and contributions, the Building and Wood Workers’ International (BWI), in partnership with Qatar's Ministry of Labour (MoL) and the Workers' Support and Insurance Fund (WSFI), organised the third edition of the Workers’ Football Cup. Started by BWI in 2022 to further solidarity and acknowledge migrant workers' indispensable role in delivering the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup, this year’s tournament showcased BWI's ongoing commitment to a sustainable, decent work legacy for migrant workers in Qatar.
Held on 3 October in Doha, the tournament brought together workers from various countries who are part of the labour force in Qatar. The Games were officially opened by Dietmar Schäfers, BWI Deputy President and Chair of the Working Group on Sports Campaign, Ambet Yuson, BWI General Secretary, and Kholoud Al Kubaisi, Executive Director of the WSFI.
The event featured friendly but spirited matches, with migrant workers from different nationalities competing in both men’s and women’s categories. The men's Workers Cup was won by the Ghanaian team, while the Kenyan team triumphed in the women's cup. Participating teams came from countries such as Uganda, Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Kenya, the Philippines, and many more, reflecting the diverse worker communities in Qatar.
This year’s tournament also welcomed several notable international guests at the opening and awarding ceremonies. Among the guests were Liz Snape, UNISON Assistant General Secretary, Dave Prentis, former President of Public Services International (PSI), Philippine Senator Risa Hontiveros, and Jean-Pascal François from CGT-FNSCBA, France.
Speaking at the event, BWI highlighted the significance of the Workers’ Football Cup in sustaining the spirit of the FIFA 2022 World Cup's commitment to decent work. "The Workers’ Football Cup is a testament to the strength, perseverance, and unity of migrant workers who have been instrumental in shaping Qatar's recent history. This tournament celebrates their efforts and ensures their voices remain heard," Yuson stated.
As BWI and its partners continue to spotlight the importance of decent work conditions, the Workers’ Football Cup stands as a powerful symbol of appreciation for the millions of migrant workers whose hard work has left an indelible mark on Qatar’s development.
The tournament was supported by UNISON and Mondiaal FNV..
