BWI’s leading Italian trade union affiliates Fillea Cgil, Filca Cisl, and Feneal Uil recently met with the leaders of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) to discuss the importance of awarding and managing the FIFA World Cup in countries that respect human rights and ensure workers' rights and protections in infrastructure projects.
Central to these talks is the need for ensuring mechanisms for effective human and labour rights due diligence in view of Saudi Arabia’s potential hosting of the 2034 FIFA World Cup. Saudi Arabia has been criticised for its labour practices, including the illegality of free trade unions and severe forms of exploitation and forced labour, as recently reported by the BWI through a complaint filed before the International Labour Organization (ILO).
The FIGC has expressed interest in the unions' concerns and anticipated further talks.
For more details, see BWI’s press release on the complaint to the ILO.
