Redefining global sporting events: Paris 2024 Olympics sets new standards
The Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games (OPGs) are heralding a transformative era in the organisation of major sporting events, building on the momentum generated by the Building and Wood Workers' International (BWI) following their groundbreaking work in Qatar.
Central to this new dimension is the implementation of a comprehensive Social Charter, signed in collaboration with French trade unions. This Charter underscores a commitment to social and environmental sustainability throughout the construction of the Athletes’ Village and the Media Cluster, two emblematic sites for the Paris 2024 Games.
BWI, alongside its French affiliates, has successfully negotiated access to construction sites, ensuring transparency and adherence to labour standards. They have instituted international joint inspections to monitor working conditions, a crucial step in safeguarding workers' rights.
Addressing the challenges associated with subcontracting, BWI has worked to implement stringent oversight and provide comprehensive training programmes. These initiatives aim to enhance skill levels and ensure safe working environments for all involved in the Games' construction projects.
BWI's collaboration with key organisations such as Solideo (the Olympic Delivery Authority) and SGP (Société du Grand Paris) has been instrumental. Together, they have focused on social aspects and environmental sustainability, aligning their efforts with the broader goals of meeting the challenges of the city of 2030.
The success of these initiatives has not gone unnoticed. French unions, having gained invaluable experience through their work with BWI, are now poised to share their knowledge with counterparts in Italy for Milano Cortina in 2026 and the Americas in 2028. This exchange of expertise is expected to influence the organisation of upcoming sporting events, fostering a global movement towards more responsible and sustainable practices.
The Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games symbolise a new era for international sporting events, one where social responsibility and environmental sustainability are paramount. Through strategic partnerships, rigorous oversight, and a steadfast commitment to ethical practices, BWI and French trade unions have set a new benchmark for the future of global sports events.
